About Me

Since August 2021 I'm working as an independent consultant for Hardware Development in IT projects. My expertise ranges from Embedded through ASICs & FPGAs, Servers & Mainframes up to enable Quantum Computers while it includes conceptual and architectural design of hardware systems, design work (LD, PD, SI, PI), simulation as well as bring-up & test.

Job History

  • 1982 Physics Diploma from University of Ulm, Germany
  • From 1982 to 1987 research associate with RWTH Aachen, Germany, working on optical characteristics of semiconductors at low temperatures
  • From 1987 to July 2021 executing various missions of hardware development projects in the Lab Boeblingen of IBM Germany as a senior technical staff member. Various travels and visits in other development labs of IBM in USA, Taiwan, UK, Swiss.

Projects

2015 - 2018 Hardware Simulation Farm

Design and implementation of a simulation farm for the verification of new server and mainframe CPUs. Thousands of compute nodes got connected via high-speed links and integrated in a very dense package into 19" racks. Due to the high integration density all components got water cooled. In each rack 1024 sim nodes including power supplies could get packaged.

2017 - 2019 Development of the Power E950 Midrange Servers

Hardware design of the 4-socket mainboards for the E950 system including peripherals for main memory, storage, I/O extensions. Also synchronization of the international team for packaging, power and signal integrity tasks.

2020 - 2021

Installation of the first IBM Quantum Computer System One
in Europe

2018 - 2020 Development of a real-time network for synchronization of qubit control entities (Patent pending).

11/2020 - 4/2021 Technical management of the installation and first operation of the IBM Quantum System One in Ehningen near Stuttgart.
